Student Excuse Policy
Many students experience illnesses that require them to miss classes. In some cases these students will be able to manage the illness at home. This is particularly true during flu season. We encourage students to stay home and not increase the chances of spreading the disease to fellow students. It is not an efficient use of staff time to be writing notes for faculty explaining the students decision to treat their illness at home.
You will find the following passage in chapter 1 of the University Handbook (on page 60 at the time this web page was created):
"Note: Health Service personnel do not provide instructors with written excuses or verbal confirmation of student illnesses."
We expect faculty to recognize the unproductive use of clinical time that would be the case if students had to get a note every time they were not able to make it to class.
