<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-indent:.5in'>The UWSP Camp Health Superv=
isor
shall have overall responsibility for all areas of camper health.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Responsibilities will include staff
orientation, supervision, and organization of the UWSP camp health services=
 and
covering time off and sick days as able to for the camp health staff on duty
for the camp session.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-indent:.5in'>The Camp Health Supervisor =
should
reside somewhere near the campus and he/she or designee shall be available =
by
beeper or phone as needed by the staff on duty.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>He/she or designee should be able =
to be
reached at any time by calling the numbers posted in the Health Service or =
UWSP
Protective Services office. Key camp health staff will be assigned cell
phones.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Those on duty or call=
 will
have their cell phone charged and on their person. </p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'text-indent:.5in'>She or he also has the
responsibility of making sure there is one full time camp health staff memb=
er
present during normal office hours for the summer.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The camp health staff members are
required to be at camp for the entire time that the camp is in session.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>This is a 24/7 requirement if ther=
e are &#8220;prn&#8221;
medications prescribed for camper in attendance. For times that the Health
Service is not open, a prearranged referral system has been created for the
immediate health care of campers/staff in need. </p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<h1>Off site <st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">Camp</st1:Pl=
aceType>
 <st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Physician</st1:PlaceName></st1:place></h1>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>For any medical needs that cannot be met by the camp h=
ealth
staff, attention from the following is to be sought:</p>

     UWSP physician is for consultation.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&n=

     </span>The camp health staff should be the first attempt in obtaining
     outside medical attention for staff or campers.</li>
 <li class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-list:l3 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list .5in=
'>St.
     Michael&#8217;s Hospital is the closest hospital in the area.<span
     style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The camp is able to have coun=
selors
     take campers to St. Michael&#8217;s urgent care or the St. Michael&#82=
17;s
     ER. for needs that cannot be met by the University Health Service.<span
     style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>No appointments are needed, b=
ut an
     attempt to call ahead should be made in order to inform the hospital s=
taff
     of the camper or counselors health concern. See the emergency procedur=
es
     handout that is given to each camp director. It is the responsibility =
of
     the camp director to provide a copy to all of their staff.</li>
 <li class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-list:l3 level1 lfo1;tab-stops:list .5in=
'>For
     UWSP Camps that provide off-campus trips, camp staff, trained in First=
 Aid
     and CPR will be briefed on the nearest medical care facilities prior to
     their departure.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>During =
the
     off-campus excursions, camper medical care permission forms and health
     histories will be taken along by the counselors.</li>
</ol>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>While no agreement for services is required from the c=
linic,
hospital, or fire station, prior confirmation of service availability has b=
een
obtained. </p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><b style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'>Infirmary<o:p=
></o:p></b></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>There are two rooms that are located just upstairs fro=
m the
camp office in Knutsen Hall.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>=
(206
and 208).<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>These rooms will be=
 used
if we need to house or isolate a student temporarily until their parents can
pick them up.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>If there is need to isolate a camper, the on-call staf=
f will
notify the parents for early pickup. The staff will arrange for instant
communication between the camper and the staff member(s) as long as the cam=
per
needs to be in the health office area. The physician on call will determine=
 the
frequency of vital signs and any other needed care.</p>

<h1>Policy for Written Health Record Requirements for Campers and Staff</h1>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Health History: A health history is required for each =
camper
and recommended for each staff member.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbs=
p;
</span>The history must be less than twelve months old; therefore meaning a=
 new
health history is required each year.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>Staff records are retained for five years and campers&#8217; records=
 are
retained forever.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Health Examination: A health examination or physical is
recommended for each camper and staff member.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The physical should have been comp=
leted
within a twelve-month period of attending camp; therefore meaning a new
physical is recommended each year for campers and every two years for
staff.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Parent or guardian permission (if the camper/counselor=
 is a
minor) is required for all persons in camp yearly.<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Camper medical forms will be kept in a permanent file.=
<span
style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>A health logbook is to be kept by the camp health staf=
f to
record distribution of all medications and administration of medical care t=
he
campers and staff members.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>Th=
e log
is kept in a single, bound, numbered notebook that is located in the camp
health service office.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The ca=
mp
health staff members are responsible for keeping the log current and must s=
ign
off on all care given that is beyond the normal care of the camper or staff
member.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span></p>

<h1>Policy and Procedure for Background Checks</h1>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>It is recommended that background checks be done on all
staff.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Please keep in mind the high degree of activity that t=

campers and staff members are experiencing and consider the weather, climat=

modify the length of rest time on very warm days, increase fluid intake, and
keep activities in the shade.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span=

will also need to be aware of the changing weather conditions in the winter=
time
and make sure that everyone has their skin covered from the cold and monitor

camp to notice if staff and campers are following proper health practices,

provided to campers must be prepared licensed/inspected providers. Food
prepared by the parent of a camper (such as commuters) must be stored in su=
ch a
way to prevent food borne illnesses.</p>

ntake
and output, especially in the summer time when campers are at greater risk =

</span>Emphasize the need to closely monitor urinary output and bowel movem=
ent
to prevent infection and illness during the camp session.<span

counselor takes in observing for anything out of the ordinary, whether that=
 is
a change in emotion, detection of an open sore or injury, or detection of an

est to
talk with the parent or guardian during check-in to determine the best means

regarding camper care, medical conditions, allergies, seizure history,
frequency, treatments, bowel habits, eating habits, the best way to adminis=
ter
medications, and any skin condition or injury that the camper has at check-=

<p class=3DMsoNormal>This is probably the only time the camp health staff w=
ill be
able to ask parents questions, so take your time and get a complete medical

<p class=3DMsoNormal>The camp health staff members collect the medications =

medications. HFS 175 requires detailed labeling for medications. Preprinted
forms will be available for common medications. Detailed forms can be creat=
ed
for the unusual medications by using on-line resources or a commercial comp=
uter

<p class=3DMsoNormal>When dispensing medications, be aware of who is near y=

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Review both the dosage and times that the medication is
given since this information may have changed since the bottle was original=
ly
filled at the pharmacy. <b>For controlled medications, make a count on arri=

and at check out. Record the counts in the logbook.</b> Make sure that the
medication administration is up to the current time of check-in so that no

amp
health staff member, it is your responsibility to organize the medications =
to
the best of your ability to make administration easy, time efficient, and
organized.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>In the past, after=
 the
medications have been collected and labeled by camper name they may be
organized for distribution.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>W=
hen
preparing medications for distribution, remember to keep them safe so that =
they
do not get spilled or mixed together.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>Each camper is assigned a plastic bag in which we will store his or =
her
medications.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>The bags are each
labeled with the camper&#8217;s name.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp;
</span>The evening meal and HS medications are administered at the camp hea=
lth
office.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>A counselor should
accompany the camper for the after-hours times. Make sure to double and tri=
ple
check that each camper is getting the right medication at the right time.<s=

style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span>There are many campers and counsel=
ors
and it could be quite easy to confuse people.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Make sure to also check if there are special instructi=
ons
for giving a medication, such as crushing the medication or placing it in a
specific food or drink for distribution.<span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&n=

</span>Having these tasks organized ahead of time will save you the time and
hassle when campers are present.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal><span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>&nbsp; </span></p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>Remember to pre-package all medications and any other =
needed
supplies when a camper is leaving camp to go to alternative locations. It is
the responsibility of the camp director to have staff with the proper
certifications escort campers on overnight and off campus trips.</p>

<p class=3DMsoNormal>When preparing for the bedtime medication pass, it is
important to remember that campers will need a supply of water in glasses f=

things ready by the time campers come to get their medications so that you =

not have too many people in your area at one time.<span
